Whether you are new to calligraphy or only beginning, this article is for you! As an experienced calligrapher, I have purchased many different brands of brush pens. Specific pens work for different experience levels, and with my help, you'll find the right one for you!
Tombow Dual Brush Pens
When I first started calligraphy, I purchased a pack of Tombow brush pens. Little did I know, this was NOT a pen for a beginner. The tips are very large and make it difficult to control if you do not know what you’re doing. Because of this, I dried these pens up in a matter of months, especially since the tips are drier than other pens. I was very disappointed and decided to start with a smaller brush pen. Don’t get me wrong, these are now one of my favorite brush pens, but I would recommend starting with a smaller tip as a beginner. Plus, there are 108 colors to choose from. It takes time to learn how to control the pen. As for the price, these pens can be expensive. If you're interested in purchasing them, Michaels usually puts them on sale.
Pentel Fude Touch Brush Pen
This pen is one of my favorite brush pens! I mostly use it for smaller lettering, such as titles. This is an excellent pen for anyone who wants to learn calligraphy. The tip is very flexible and is easy to control. Learning how to control the amount of pressure you use is very important, and this pen will make it easier. As for the price, these brush pens are extremely cheap. A two-pack is only five dollars!
ZIG Brushables
These brush pens have a similar tip to the Tombow brush pens and are significantly drier. Like I've stated in the previous paragraphs, these are one of the more popular brands. ZIG is known for its quality supplies, and these pens do not fall short of the expectation. In my opinion, these brush pens would be better for a person at an intermediate or advanced level. These pens are harder to control, and it takes practice to get it right.
